A New Flight Path

Hand Knit and Felted Canadian wool flight hat

Of course there is a handmade hat to go with whatever random thought is passing through my brain. In this case it is about charting a new direction both in life and in business (one and the same, really.) Flight hats have been a constant theme in my hat making life. They represent strength, courage, pushing boundaries, determination to follow a dream and a bit of goofiness.

This is where it would be appropriate to insert an announcement that I will be riding my bicycle around the world, flying solo across the Atlantic or going back to school to study bio engineering. I’m afraid all I have for you is my decision to cut ties with social media. Not sure this will secure me a spot in the order of Canada, but I’m proud of myself. The reason for this decision is simple. These platforms are not very healthy for me.

Take to the skies in a one of a kind Handmade Flight hat

Can a gal sell hats without Meta? I’m certainly going to try my darnedest. In the past 10 social media free days I have been investing time into my own website. This includes adding new hats to my site, like this one……

….and taking the time to write more in this space. I recently wrote about snow and Indigo and my obsession with woollen spun, squishy Canadian Yarn. Writing is something I enjoy doing. Writing in my own space, with my own rules, feels right.

As I mentioned before, putting hats up on my website, something I tend to seriously neglect, has been part of my strategy to stop mindless scrolling. There does seem to be some part of the day when my fingers really want to scroll. Turning to the repetitive task of listing hats seems to help.

It’s possible that at some point I may discover that I really do need social media to connect with fellow hat lovers, but, for now, I’m going to give this new direction everything I’ve got. Hopefully, I will show Meta that I’m perfectly fine without it. Here are some other artisans or designers who have inspired me to choose this new path….Micheline Courtemanche, Farm and Folk, Kate Davies Designs, Bloom Handmade studio. If you want to be inspired by incredible fibre related talent be sure to check out these women. I’m so inspired by their work and their commitment to long form communication.

If you enjoy reading my blog posts please help spread the word amongst your friends. It helps me immensely.

xoxo Anna

Although I miss you on social media, I was excited to see your email in my inbox. I enjoy your blog posts with new hats so much.

As my eye turns toward Spring, that wheat straw madhat has piqued my interest…

Hi Laura, I miss you, too. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. It would be so fun to custom make you a straw hat. I would eagerly anticipate the whole outfit.

I subscribe to Kate Davies and look forward to getting her emails. I like to put on the kettle and have a cup of tea while appreciating her thoughts, ideas and new designs. I know I will look forward to your blog posts with the same gratitude. I am also weaning myself away from social media. I always loved the blogs I subscribed to back in the 2000s. You could get a sense of the story and the person. I will enjoy seeing you come up in my email and will put the kettle on to enjoy the glimpse into your creative life.
