Halifax Bound and a Polar Fleece Replacement

Hello again, I wanted to let you know that I will be at the Halifax Brewery Market this Saturday from 8-1 and also the following two Saturdays, after which I will curl up in my cosy house and try to not leave it for a few weeks.

I also wanted to let you know that I have finally found a fabric with all the soft, squishy, warm qualities of polar fleece, but without plastic microfibres polluting our earth. Boiled wool! This thought has actually been percolating in my mind for years, but sometimes my synapses are on the slow side.

I think one of my concerns was that it wouldn’t be as soft as polar fleece, but I solved this by lining it with organic cotton and hemp jersey fabric. This hat is so incredibly warm. I’m so delighted with it. I don’t yet have them listed on my website, but just reach out if you would like me to custom make you one.

This is a custom order that I made for Brenda. This was such a fun collaboration. I don’t do tons of custom orders, because design takes a long time, but sometimes the challenge is too good to pass on. Brenda sent me a photo of a vintage Christmas card. She knew she wanted felt candy canes, holly leaves and red velvet. I said I would do it and then said to myself, How the heck do I make felt candy canes and holly leaves? Well, as you can see, I figured it out.

I also finished another Tulip cloche. This one is destined to become a knitting pattern. Right now my evening focus is knitting my son a scarf for Christmas, but I am looking forward to writing this one up. I did manage to knit a double brim and I like it much better this way.

Well, that’s all for now. Hope to see some of you in the real world and also grateful for these virtual chats with the rest of you. P.S. I’m not always the best at responding to comments, but I see them all and love them. I’ll try to be better about that.
xoxo Anna

The new boiled wool hats are gorgeous, Anna. They also look more structured (though still squishy) than the polar fleece. I love these designs.
Thanks, Colleen! Yes, they are thicker than the polar fleece hats.
These hats are so cute! Love the Christmas one! I guess we will eventually have winter here in East Texas!
I’m looking forward to seeing your new boiled wool hats during my next visit to Nova Scotia. See you at the farmers market 2026
Nova Scotia is so lucky to have a maker always in search of Earth friendly solutions. I continue to wear 2 polar fleece hats of yours, so well made, they look as good as day 1. They will not be going in to land fill, but that doesn’t mean I won’t come home with some boiled wool adorning my head. Thanks for your artistry, Anna!
Hi, Lillian! I’m so glad you are still getting use out of your polar fleece hats. I’m so sorry I didn’t get to see you last Saturday. I don’t think I am going to get back there again before Christmas. They have a new back room and it wasn’t great for me. I need to think of some new ways to see my favourite customers in Halifax. Be well, Anna
