Introducing Elsie

Sometimes the new hat design muse dances into my studio, completely uninterested in how busy I am. I try, very diplomatically, I think, to shoo her out the door, explaining that the Christmas season is really not the best time to explore new hat possibilities. Might she come back in February when I am caught up on orders? Between you and me, she was really pushy and there was nothing to be done, but let her in.

I naively thought that after designing my new boiled wool Charlotte hat, she might take her leave, but no, she over stayed her welcome and insisted that Elsie come to life.

I suppose I should be grateful because, truly, I adore this new 1920s style toque hat. It folds up, completely hugging the ears, but the right side of the hat flares out a bit. The hat is lined with organic cotton and hemp jersey.

This was the first Elsie hat I made. The morning after her arrival, here on earth, it was -11 c with a strong wind making it feel like -22c. I decided to take her for a test drive. I was so impressed with how warm she is and also with how cute she looks with a sporty parka/ski jacket that I kept her for myself. That happens sometimes, but fortunately, I can always make more. I put a few of the Elsie hats up here on my website. I have one of each of these three colours in stock and ready to ship. They fit a medium sized head. I can also take custom orders, but new orders will ship in early January. You can find the 3 ready to ship Elsie hats by clicking HERE. If you would like me to custom make you one, just send me a note.

P.S. The prince (on his tattered thrown) says, Hello.

Anna, your first Elsie, along with your sweater: what a combo! You look mahvelous, and Elsie is divinely inspired.
All best,
Helen

I love Elsie! That was my husband’s grandmother’s name. She was born in 1919!!
I knew I was naming her after someone. Now I know who.
